Cleveland Repertory Orchestra
Our Story
About
Founded in 2021 by conductor Matthew Salvaggio, the Cleveland Repertory Orchestra was created to challenge the conventions of orchestral programming and expand what a community orchestra can be. The ensemble brings together professional performers, music educators, conservatory students, and accomplished local musicians—each committed to creating dynamic, inclusive, and high-level performances that reflect Cleveland’s diverse artistic spirit.
From its inception, the CRO has been guided by a simple belief: that great music should be available to everyone. All concerts are presented free of charge, removing financial barriers and inviting audiences from every background to experience the power of live orchestral music. Each season features a rich blend of new works, rediscovered masterworks, and historically excluded voices, often unified by bold thematic storytelling that connects music to social and cultural issues of our time.
Performances are more than concerts—they are shared experiences that encourage discovery, dialogue, and reflection. Audiences enjoy intimate venues, thoughtful commentary from the podium, and opportunities to engage directly with the musicians and conductor. As the orchestra grows, so too does its commitment to expanding reach through digital streaming, new community partnerships, and collaborations across artistic disciplines.
The Cleveland Repertory Orchestra is proud to represent a new model for a modern orchestra—one defined by curiosity, inclusion, and a belief that music can both honor tradition and illuminate the future.
Mission
The Cleveland Repertory Orchestra explores the full breadth of orchestral music—championing new works, rediscovering historically excluded voices, and reimagining the concert experience for today’s audiences. Through inclusive programming, community partnerships, and free public performances, we make exceptional music accessible to all and foster a more connected, equitable, and inspired Cleveland.
